What it actually does
Integer overflow in tr_bitfieldEnsureNthBitAlloced allows a crafted peer message to trigger an out-of-bounds write, enabling denial of service or arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can crash or fully compromise systems running vulnerable BitTorrent clients, disrupting file sharing operations and risking data theft or further lateral movement.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker connects to a vulnerable Transmission instance as a peer and sends a specially crafted message that causes the integer overflow and subsequent out-of-bounds write during bitfield allocation.
How to fix it
Upgrade Transmission to version 2.84 or later on all affected platforms including Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo, and direct Transmission installations.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed Transmission version is 2.84 or newer; test peer message handling with updated builds and review changelog entries for the bitfield fix.
Typical attack path
- Locate publicly reachable Transmission instances accepting peer connections
- Craft and send a malicious peer message sized to trigger the integer overflow
- Trigger out-of-bounds write to achieve denial of service or code execution
How to detect it
Review Transmission process logs and crash dumps for unexpected terminations or memory corruption signals around the time of peer connections; inspect network traffic for anomalous peer message sizes.
What your security team should do
- Immediately upgrade all Transmission instances to 2.84 or later
- Restrict inbound peer connections where feasible until patched
- Monitor for unexpected Transmission process crashes or restarts
The record
Integer overflow in the tr_bitfieldEnsureNthBitAlloced function in bitfield.c in Transmission before 2.84 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted peer message, which triggers an out-of-bounds write.
