What it actually does

Remote unauthenticated arbitrary memory write and corruption in fastping.c allowing full control of process memory layout and contents.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can remotely compromise network monitoring systems, leading to loss of visibility into routing infrastructure, potential lateral movement, and service disruption; CISA KEV listing requires remediation by 2025-07-28.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends a specially crafted packet or request to the MRLG fastping endpoint, triggering the memory corruption primitive to overwrite critical structures and achieve arbitrary code execution or denial of service; the flaw has been exploited in the wild.

How to fix it

Upgrade Multi-Router Looking Glass to version 5.5.0 or later; restrict network access to the service until patched.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed version is at least 5.5.0; attempt to reproduce the original fastping memory corruption with safe test inputs in a lab environment.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate exposed MRLG instances on the network
  2. Send crafted input to fastping functionality
  3. Trigger arbitrary memory write and corruption
  4. Escalate to code execution or crash the service

How to detect it

Review MRLG process logs and system crash dumps for memory corruption indicators; inspect network traffic for unusual fastping requests; correlate with KEV exploitation patterns.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the 5.5.0 upgrade immediately due to active exploitation and CISA deadline
  • Block or restrict inbound access to MRLG ports from untrusted networks
  • Monitor process crashes and anomalous memory activity on MRLG hosts

The record

fastping.c in MRLG (aka Multi-Router Looking Glass) before 5.5.0 allows remote attackers to cause an arbitrary memory write and memory corruption.
