What it actually does
The VGA emulator in QEMU permits a local guest user to read arbitrary host memory contents by configuring the guest display to an excessively high resolution.
Why it matters to the business
Virtualized environments may leak sensitive host memory data to compromised guest systems, increasing the risk of data exposure in multi-tenant setups and requiring urgent patching of affected database packages to meet operational compliance.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker who has gained local access inside a guest virtual machine manipulates the VGA display settings to a high resolution, triggering the emulator flaw that inadvertently exposes portions of the underlying host memory for reading.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected packages to the listed fixed versions: mariadb-5.5 on Ubuntu 14.04 to 5.5.46-1ubuntu0.14.04.2, mysql-5.6 on Ubuntu 14.04 to 5.6.27-0ubuntu0.14.04.1, and mariadb-10.0 on Ubuntu 16.04 to 10.0.22-0ubuntu1. Apply updates across all virtualized hosts and verify no unpatched guests remain.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm package versions match the fixed releases on all hosts, test guest display operations under high resolution after patching to ensure no memory leakage occurs, and review hypervisor logs for any prior anomalous VGA configuration attempts.
Typical attack path
- Obtain or compromise local access inside a guest VM running on an affected QEMU-based hypervisor
- Modify guest display configuration to request an unusually high screen resolution
- Trigger the VGA emulator code path that leaks host memory contents into guest-accessible buffers
- Read and exfiltrate the exposed host memory data from within the guest
How to detect it
Review hypervisor and guest system logs for unusual VGA display mode changes or high-resolution configuration events around the time of suspected access; examine QEMU process activity and any guest-initiated display setting modifications.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching of all listed mariadb and mysql packages to the specified fixed versions within the next maintenance window
- Audit virtual machine configurations for any guests using high-resolution display settings
- Monitor for new guest deployments on unpatched hosts until remediation is complete
The record
The VGA emulator in QEMU allows local guest users to read host memory by setting the display to a high resolution.
