What it actually does

The vulnerability introduces a timing side-channel in the metadata proxy path that allows remote attackers to distinguish valid instance ID signatures from invalid ones by measuring small differences in response latency.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers may obtain instance metadata that reveals configuration details, network information, or credentials associated with running virtual machines, increasing the chance of follow-on compromise in cloud environments.

How an attack unfolds

An unauthenticated remote attacker repeatedly queries the Neutron-proxied metadata service with candidate instance ID signatures; by observing which requests produce measurably faster or slower responses the attacker narrows the search space until a valid signature is identified and instance metadata is retrieved.

How to fix it

Upgrade OpenStack Nova to 2013.2.4, 2014.1.2, or Juno-2 (or later maintenance releases) and restart the affected services; if immediate patching is impossible, restrict network access to the metadata proxy and enforce strict rate limiting.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm Nova package versions match or exceed the fixed releases listed above; review api/metadata/handler.py for removal of the timing-dependent comparison logic and perform load tests that verify uniform response times for valid and invalid instance IDs.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate the public or tenant-facing metadata service endpoint exposed through Neutron
  2. Generate candidate instance-ID signatures and issue metadata requests
  3. Record response timing for each candidate
  4. Use statistical analysis of timing differences to identify valid signatures
  5. Retrieve and analyze the leaked instance metadata

How to detect it

Search Neutron and Nova metadata service logs for unusually high volumes of requests to instance metadata paths, especially clusters of requests that differ only in the instance-ID portion of the URL; correlate with source IPs that do not correspond to legitimate cloud-init or management traffic.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed Nova upgrades within the next maintenance window
  • Add network ACLs or security-group rules that limit metadata service exposure
  • Enable detailed logging of metadata requests and configure alerts for high-volume or anomalous timing patterns
  • Review downstream OpenStack deployments for the same proxy configuration

The record

api/metadata/handler.py in OpenStack Compute (Nova) before 2013.2.4, 2014.x before 2014.1.2, and Juno before Juno-2, when proxying metadata requests through Neutron, makes it easier for remote attackers to guess instance ID signatures via a brute-force attack that relies on timing differences in responses to instance metadata requests.
