What it actually does
Double free condition in OpenSSL DTLS packet processing allows remote attackers to trigger memory corruption and application crash.
Why it matters to the business
Service disruption for applications relying on DTLS, increasing operational downtime and support costs; high ecosystem prevalence amplifies exposure across many deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends specially crafted DTLS packets that trigger an error path leading to the double free; no named threat actors are associated with this issue.
How to fix it
Upgrade OpenSSL to 0.9.8zb, 1.0.0n, or 1.0.1i (or later maintained releases) and rebuild dependent applications; disable DTLS where not required.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed OpenSSL version against fixed releases; attempt controlled reproduction of the double-free packet sequence in a test environment to confirm stability.
Typical attack path
- Scan for services exposing DTLS on UDP ports
- Craft and transmit malformed DTLS handshake or alert packets
- Trigger error condition that causes double free
- Observe application crash and denial of service
How to detect it
Review application and system logs for sudden DTLS-related crashes or segmentation faults around the time of suspected attacks; correlate with inbound UDP traffic on DTLS ports.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of all OpenSSL instances to patched versions
- Inventory DTLS usage across the environment
- Apply network controls to limit exposure of DTLS endpoints
- Monitor for application crashes correlated with DTLS traffic
The record
Double free vulnerability in d1_both.c in the DTLS implementation in OpenSSL 0.9.8 before 0.9.8zb, 1.0.0 before 1.0.0n, and 1.0.1 before 1.0.1i allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted DTLS packets that trigger an error condition.
