Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A very old flaw in a network connection tool could let someone who controls a configuration file take extra privileges, but the issue was fixed years ago and is unlikely to be a current threat.

What it actually does

Integer overflow in the getword function in options.c allows a long word in an options file to trigger a heap-based buffer overflow that corrupts security-relevant variables and grants access to privileged options.

Why it matters to the business

An attacker who can supply or modify an options file could gain elevated privileges on affected systems; the vulnerability is more than a decade old with low exploit probability and limited downstream exposure, reducing overall operational risk for organizations running the fixed version.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts an options file containing an excessively long word that triggers the integer overflow during parsing in pppd; the resulting heap corruption overwrites security variables, enabling the attacker to activate privileged options that would otherwise be restricted.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected typo3 (Bitnami) installations to version 9.5.23 or later; verify that the bundled ppp package is at least version 2.4.7.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed pppd version is 2.4.7 or newer and that typo3 (Bitnami) is at 9.5.23; review options files for unexpectedly long entries and test that privileged options remain inaccessible to unprivileged users.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify or gain write access to a pppd options file used by the target process
  2. Insert a specially crafted long word into the options file
  3. Trigger pppd to parse the malicious options file
  4. Exploit the resulting heap corruption to activate privileged options

How to detect it

Review historical logs for pppd startup events that reference unusual or very long option values; examine system and application logs around the time pppd was invoked for evidence of unexpected privilege changes or configuration reloads.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately upgrade typo3 (Bitnami) to 9.5.23 where the fix is present
  • Audit any systems still running pppd versions prior to 2.4.7 and isolate them until patched
  • Restrict write access to pppd options files to the minimum required accounts

The record

Integer overflow in the getword function in options.c in pppd in Paul's PPP Package (ppp) before 2.4.7 allows attackers to "access privileged options" via a long word in an options file, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow that "[corrupts] security-relevant variables."
