What it actually does

XML external entity (XXE) processing flaw that allows remote attackers to supply a crafted DTD in an XML request, enabling arbitrary file reads from the server filesystem or potential arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can steal sensitive configuration files, credentials, or monitoring data and potentially take control of the Zabbix server, resulting in loss of visibility into infrastructure and possible lateral movement.

How an attack unfolds

An unauthenticated attacker crafts an XML payload containing an external entity reference pointing to local files or system commands, submits it to a Zabbix XML endpoint, and the server resolves the entity, returning file contents or executing code.

How to fix it

Upgrade Zabbix 1.8.x to 1.8.21rc1 or newer, 2.0.x to 2.0.13rc1 or newer, 2.2.x to 2.2.5rc1 or newer, and 2.3.x to 2.3.2 or newer; disable external entity resolution in the XML parser if patching is delayed.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed Zabbix version against the fixed releases; attempt a controlled XXE test payload against a non-production instance to confirm entity resolution is disabled.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify publicly reachable Zabbix XML endpoints
  2. Submit crafted XML request containing malicious DTD
  3. Trigger entity expansion to read files or execute code
  4. Exfiltrate data or establish persistence

How to detect it

Inspect web server and Zabbix application logs for incoming XML requests that contain DOCTYPE declarations or repeated ENTITY definitions; correlate with outbound file access or unexpected process spawns on the Zabbix host.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the version upgrades listed in remediation guidance as highest priority
  • Review and restrict network exposure of Zabbix XML endpoints
  • Enable XML parser hardening and input validation controls
  • Monitor for new exploit code releases given the available public proof-of-concept

The record

XML external entity (XXE) vulnerability in Zabbix 1.8.x before 1.8.21rc1, 2.0.x before 2.0.13rc1, 2.2.x before 2.2.5rc1, and 2.3.x before 2.3.2 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files or potentially execute arbitrary code via a crafted DTD in an XML request.
