What it actually does
The flaw causes mathematical comparisons inside lookup expansions to be processed twice, allowing a crafted lookup value to inject and execute arbitrary commands with elevated privileges.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers can obtain higher-level access on systems running the affected software, raising the chance of unauthorized command execution, data access, or service compromise; the issue affects a widely deployed Bitnami-packaged application with many downstream instances.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access supplies a specially formatted lookup value containing mathematical expressions that, because of the double-expansion behavior, are interpreted as shell commands and executed under the privileges of the Exim process or dependent application.
How to fix it
Upgrade Typo3 (Bitnami) to version 6.2.54 or later, which incorporates Exim 4.83 or newer containing the corrected expansion logic.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed Typo3 (Bitnami) release is at least 6.2.54 and that the bundled Exim binary reports version 4.83 or higher; test that crafted lookup values no longer result in command execution.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on a host running the vulnerable software
- Prepare a lookup value that triggers double expansion of a mathematical comparison
- Invoke the lookup through normal mail or application processing
- Execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the Exim or Typo3 process
How to detect it
Review Exim and system logs for unexpected command invocations triggered by lookup operations; examine authentication and process-creation records for local users gaining higher privileges around the time of suspicious lookups.
What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed Typo3 (Bitnami) 6.2.54 release across all instances without delay
- Restrict local accounts that can supply lookup values or trigger expansions
- Audit recent local command executions and privilege changes on affected hosts
The record
expand.c in Exim before 4.83 expands mathematical comparisons twice, which allows local users to gain privileges and execute arbitrary commands via a crafted lookup value.
