What it actually does
Use-after-free in skb_zerocopy (formerly nfqnl_zcopy) permits reading uninitialized or freed kernel memory buffers over the network, resulting in partial disclosure of sensitive kernel data without requiring authentication.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers on the same network segment may obtain kernel memory contents that could contain credentials, encryption keys, or other internal state, increasing the risk of follow-on compromise on affected Linux systems; the vulnerability remains relevant on any unpatched or legacy deployments still running kernels from the 3.13 era or earlier.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker on an adjacent network segment crafts network traffic that exercises the netfilter queue path, triggering the missing orphaning operation in skb_zerocopy and reading the resulting freed memory contents to harvest kernel data; public exploit code has been available since disclosure.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a Linux kernel version that contains the fix for the skb_zerocopy use-after-free (any current distribution kernel released after March 2014); apply the latest vendor kernel packages and reboot; where upgrades are impossible, restrict access to netfilter queue functionality from untrusted adjacent networks.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel is newer than 3.13.6 and contains the skb_zerocopy orphaning correction; review kernel changelog or vendor advisory for the specific commit that added the missing skb_orphan call; re-test with available proof-of-concept code in a lab environment to verify the information leak is closed.
Typical attack path
- Position on the same L2/L3 network segment as the target Linux host
- Send crafted packets that reach the nfnetlink_queue path and exercise skb_zerocopy
- Trigger the use-after-free condition to read kernel memory
- Parse leaked data for sensitive artifacts usable in further attacks
How to detect it
Examine system logs for unusual netfilter queue activity or nfnetlink messages preceding unexpected process crashes or information leaks; review kernel crash dumps or memory forensic images for evidence of skb_zerocopy-related use-after-free patterns; correlate with network captures showing anomalous packets targeting netfilter queue sockets.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all internet-facing or multi-tenant Linux systems within the next maintenance window
- Inventory remaining systems still running kernels <= 3.13 and schedule immediate replacement or isolation
- Harden netfilter configurations to limit exposure of queue-related netlink sockets to adjacent networks
- Monitor EPSS and exploit availability trends for any renewed interest in this class of kernel memory disclosure
The record
Use-after-free vulnerability in the nfqnl_zcopy function in net/netfilter/nfnetlink_queue_core.c in the Linux kernel through 3.13.6 allows attackers to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory by leveraging the absence of a certain orphaning operation. NOTE: the affected code was moved to the skb_zerocopy function in net/core/skbuff.c before the vulnerability was announced.
