What it actually does

Directory traversal in NTWebServer permits remote unauthenticated reading of APP files containing administrative passwords, enabling subsequent arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control of industrial automation systems, leading to production disruption, data theft, or ransomware deployment; the flaw remains actively exploited years after disclosure with a past CISA remediation deadline.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts HTTP requests containing directory traversal sequences to NTWebServer, retrieves stored administrative credentials from APP files, authenticates to the system, and then executes arbitrary code; public exploit code and active exploitation have been observed in the wild.

How to fix it

Upgrade InduSoft Web Studio to version 7.1 SP2 Patch 4 or later; restrict network exposure of NTWebServer and enforce strong authentication on all web interfaces.

How to confirm the fix worked

Inventory all InduSoft Web Studio installations, verify version is at least 7.1 SP2 Patch 4, and scan web server logs for historical traversal patterns targeting APP files.

Typical attack path

  1. Send crafted HTTP GET requests containing path traversal sequences to NTWebServer endpoints
  2. Read APP files to extract administrative passwords
  3. Authenticate using obtained credentials
  4. Upload and execute arbitrary code or scripts

How to detect it

Review NTWebServer access logs for requests containing directory traversal sequences such as ../ or encoded equivalents that target .APP files; correlate with successful authentication events from previously unknown sources.

  • ../
  • ..%2f
  • .APP
  • NTWebServer

What your security team should do

  • Immediately apply the SP2 Patch 4 update on all affected systems due to KEV listing and active exploitation
  • Block or tightly restrict external access to NTWebServer ports
  • Monitor for path traversal attempts in web logs and alert on APP file access

The record

Directory traversal vulnerability in NTWebServer in InduSoft Web Studio 7.1 before SP2 Patch 4 allows remote attackers to read administrative passwords in APP files, and consequently execute arbitrary code, via unspecified web requests.
