What it actually does

Integer overflows in xf_Pointer_New and xf_Bitmap_Decompress cause allocation of insufficient memory buffers when processing attacker-supplied width and height values, resulting in subsequent out-of-bounds memory access.

Why it matters to the business

Remote attackers can crash or potentially execute arbitrary code on systems running the vulnerable FreeRDP client, leading to loss of availability for remote desktop sessions and possible compromise of endpoint systems.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker connects to a vulnerable FreeRDP client over the network and supplies crafted X11 graphics payloads containing malicious width and height values to the pointer or bitmap decompression routines, triggering the integer overflow and subsequent memory corruption.

How to fix it

Upgrade FreeRDP to a version containing the integer overflow fixes in client/X11/xf_graphics.c; apply all available security updates from distribution maintainers such as openSUSE.

How to confirm the fix worked

Inspect the version of the installed FreeRDP package and review xf_graphics.c to confirm that width/height calculations now use safe integer handling before allocation.

Typical attack path

  1. Establish network connection to FreeRDP client listening for X11 graphics data
  2. Transmit specially crafted bitmap or pointer update containing oversized width/height fields
  3. Trigger integer overflow during size calculation in xf_graphics.c
  4. Cause allocation of undersized buffer leading to memory corruption or crash

How to detect it

Review application logs and crash dumps for FreeRDP processes handling X11 graphics; search for unexpected terminations during bitmap or pointer processing after receiving remote updates.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all FreeRDP installations to patched releases
  • Restrict exposure of FreeRDP clients to untrusted networks until updated
  • Monitor vendor advisories for FreeRDP and downstream distributions for backported fixes

The record

Multiple integer overflows in client/X11/xf_graphics.c in FreeRDP allow remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via the width and height to the (1) xf_Pointer_New or (2) xf_Bitmap_Decompress function, which causes an incorrect amount of memory to be allocated.
