Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A problem in the way certain programs handle font files on older Linux systems could let someone already on the computer gain extra access rights.

What it actually does

Integer overflows in FontFileAddEntry and lexAlias allow a heap-based buffer overflow when processing oversized fonts.dir or fonts.alias metadata files added to the font path, enabling local privilege escalation.

Why it matters to the business

Local attackers with access to a vulnerable system can escalate privileges, potentially taking full control of affected hosts and increasing risk of lateral movement or data compromise in environments using older X11 font libraries.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access creates a directory containing a fonts.dir or fonts.alias file with an abnormally large number of entries, adds that directory to the system's font path, and triggers the vulnerable functions when an X server or application enumerates fonts, causing the overflow and arbitrary code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade libXfont to version 1.4.8 or later (or 1.4.99.901 or later for the 1.4.9x branch) on all affected systems; remove untrusted font directories from the font path until patches are applied.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed libXfont version is at or above the fixed releases; confirm absence of oversized fonts.dir or fonts.alias files in font paths; test that font path changes no longer trigger crashes or overflows in controlled environments.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell or user access on target system
  2. Craft directory with maliciously large fonts.dir or fonts.alias file
  3. Append directory to font path via configuration or command
  4. Trigger font enumeration through X server startup or application launch
  5. Exploit resulting heap overflow for privilege escalation

How to detect it

Review system logs for X server or font-related crashes or errors around the time of suspected activity; inspect font path configurations and directory contents for unexpectedly large alias or directory files.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching libXfont on all systems still running versions before 1.4.8
  • Audit and restrict font path configurations to trusted directories only
  • Monitor for any remaining legacy X11 font usage and plan migration to maintained alternatives

The record

Multiple integer overflows in the (1) FontFileAddEntry and (2) lexAlias functions in X.Org libXfont before 1.4.8 and 1.4.9x before 1.4.99.901 might allow local users to gain privileges by adding a directory with a large fonts.dir or fonts.alias file to the font path, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow, related to metadata.
