What it actually does

The flaw fails to initialize the SRV_SNAPSHOT_ARRAY response field when vfs shadow copy is enabled, allowing remote authenticated users to read uninitialized process memory via FSCTL_GET_SHADOW_COPY_DATA or FSCTL_SRV_ENUMERATE_SNAPSHOTS requests.

Attackers with valid credentials may obtain sensitive information such as credentials or configuration details from server memory, increasing risk of further unauthorized access or data exposure in file-sharing environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker authenticates to a vulnerable Samba instance with shadow copy vfs configuration enabled and issues a crafted FSCTL request; the server returns uninitialized memory contents in the response without proper sanitization.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected Samba installations to version 4.0.18, 4.1.8 or later; for listed tomcat (Bitnami) deployments apply the update to version 8.5.99.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm Samba version is at or above the fixed releases, review vfs shadow copy configuration, and test that FSCTL responses no longer contain uninitialized memory contents.

1. Obtain valid authentication to the Samba service
2. Identify or confirm vfs shadow copy configuration is active
3. Send FSCTL_GET_SHADOW_COPY_DATA or FSCTL_SRV_ENUMERATE_SNAPSHOTS request
4. Parse response to extract sensitive data from uninitialized memory

How to detect it

Review Samba access and audit logs for FSCTL_GET_SHADOW_COPY_DATA or FSCTL_SRV_ENUMERATE_SNAPSHOTS requests from authenticated sessions; correlate with shadow copy vfs module usage.
