What it actually does
The get_resource function in mod_dav_svn crashes on non-GET requests to the server root when SVNListParentPath is enabled due to improper input validation.
Why it matters to the business
Causes intermittent or sustained denial of service for Subversion-based version control, interrupting developer workflows and build pipelines; low urgency given the issue's age and lack of known active exploitation or ransomware use.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker locates an Apache Subversion server exposing mod_dav_svn with SVNListParentPath enabled and issues HTTP requests using methods other than GET against the repository root, triggering the crash in get_resource.
How to fix it
Upgrade the listed Chainguard packages to the fixed versions (datadog-agent-fips and related packages to 7.51.1-r1). Disable SVNListParentPath when not required and ensure Subversion is at least 1.7.15 or 1.8.6.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm package versions meet or exceed the fixed releases, review httpd.conf for SVNListParentPath, and test with non-GET requests to the root to verify no crash occurs.
Typical attack path
- Scan for Subversion servers with SVNListParentPath enabled
- Send non-GET HTTP request to the server root path
- Observe service crash and repeat to sustain denial of service
How to detect it
Review Apache and Subversion error logs for crashes immediately following non-GET requests to repository root paths; correlate with mod_dav_svn module activity.
What your security team should do
- Apply the specified package upgrades across all affected deployments
- Audit and harden Subversion configurations to disable unnecessary SVNListParentPath settings
- Monitor service availability metrics for unexpected crashes
The record
The get_resource function in repos.c in the mod_dav_svn module in Apache Subversion before 1.7.15 and 1.8.x before 1.8.6, when SVNListParentPath is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via vectors related to the server root and request methods other than GET, as demonstrated by the "svn ls http://svn.example.com" command.
