What it actually does
Buffer overflow in SQLite skip-scan query optimization path allows crafted SQL to trigger memory corruption and process crash.
Why it matters to the business
Applications using the vulnerable SQLite library can be forced offline, interrupting services that rely on local or embedded databases and requiring restarts or failover.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a specially constructed SQL statement that exercises the skip-scan optimization in version 3.8.2; the malformed input overflows an internal buffer, crashing the database engine. Public exploit code has been available for years, though no named threat actors or ransomware campaigns are associated with this issue.
How to fix it
Upgrade SQLite to a version newer than 3.8.2 on all affected systems including Ubuntu packages; rebuild or redeploy any statically linked binaries that embed the vulnerable library.
How to confirm the fix worked
Query the SQLite library version string and confirm it is newer than 3.8.2; attempt reproduction of the original crash using a known proof-of-concept statement in a test environment.
Typical attack path
- Locate an application or service exposing SQLite 3.8.2
- Send a crafted SQL statement that triggers skip-scan optimization
- Trigger memory corruption resulting in denial of service
How to detect it
Monitor application and system logs for SQLite process crashes or segmentation faults immediately following SQL execution; review query logs for unusually complex or malformed SELECT statements that could exercise skip-scan paths.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all instances of SQLite 3.8.2 within the next maintenance window
- Inventory embedded SQLite usage across applications and containers
- Add SQLite version checks to vulnerability scanning policies
The record
Buffer overflow in the skip-scan optimization in SQLite 3.8.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via crafted SQL statements.
