What it actually does

Remote unauthenticated attacker triggers a divide-by-zero in the ellipse rendering path, causing the process to crash with no impact on confidentiality or integrity.

Why it matters to the business

Applications or services using the affected image library become unavailable after receiving a single malicious image, leading to service disruption until the process is restarted; widespread use in desktop environments and image viewers increases operational exposure.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a minimal image containing a 2x1 ellipse and delivers it over the network to any service that processes untrusted images with the vulnerable library; the malformed geometry calculation immediately produces a divide-by-zero and terminates the application.

How to fix it

Upgrade imlib2 to version 1.4.9 or later on all affected systems; rebuild any dependent packages against the patched library; apply vendor updates for distributions that ship the library.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed library version is 1.4.9 or newer; run the library's test suite or a minimal reproducer that draws a 2x1 ellipse and verify the process no longer crashes.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a network-accessible service that renders images using the vulnerable library
  2. Generate or obtain a 2x1 ellipse image that triggers the faulty code path
  3. Transmit the image to the target service
  4. Observe application crash and service outage

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected crashes or segmentation faults in processes linked to the library; correlate crash timestamps with inbound image uploads or network connections.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching systems that accept untrusted images from external sources
  • Inventory all packages that link against the library and schedule upgrades
  • Monitor for application crashes in image-processing services as a temporary detection measure

The record

imlib2 before 1.4.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error and application crash) by drawing a 2x1 ellipse.
